Questions
Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?
GIF uses a 256-colour palette per frame and a simple lossless compression scheme. MP4 uses a modern video codec (H.264) with motion prediction and DCT compression, which is far more efficient for moving images.
Does my GIF get uploaded?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your device.
The output says WebM instead of MP4 — is that normal?
Yes. When your browser cannot encode H.264 video, the tool automatically falls back to VP9/WebM, which is equally well supported by modern browsers and video players.
Will the animation look exactly the same?
The tool decodes every GIF frame including those that only describe a changed region, so the full animation is preserved. The output frame rate is set by the option you choose — if it differs from the GIF's native timing, the speed will change accordingly.
Are GIFs with transparent regions converted correctly?
GIF transparency maps to a fully transparent colour, which is composited against the previous frame state before encoding. The result may look slightly different in a video player that does not support alpha, since MP4 typically has no transparency layer.
