How it works

  1. 1

Drop your image onto the upload zone. The tool accepts the format shown in the accepted types for this page.

  2. 2

Adjust quality if the target format is JPEG or WebP, and pick a background colour if the source has transparency.

  3. 3

Click Convert — the output file downloads immediately and is processed entirely in your browser.

Questions

Why does JPEG conversion have a background colour option?

JPEG stores no transparency information. Without a background, semi-transparent pixels would map to their foreground colour at full opacity, producing dark fringes. Compositing onto a colour you choose produces the correct result.

What does the quality slider do?

It controls the JPEG or WebP encoder's compression level. Higher values preserve more detail at the cost of a larger file. PNG ignores the slider because PNG compression is always lossless.

Will converting to PNG make my file larger?

Often yes. PNG is lossless so it stores every pixel exactly, which typically produces larger files than JPEG or WebP for photographs. The size comparison below the result shows the real before-and-after numbers.

Does converting re-encode the pixels?

Yes. Every format change passes through the canvas, which re-encodes the image. EXIF and other metadata are not carried over to the output file as a side effect of this re-encoding.

Will my image be sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs directly in your browser on your own device. Your file never leaves your machine.
