Remove Background

Cut a subject out of a photo by erasing the background, delivering the result as a transparent PNG. Works best on people and portraits.

How it works

  1. 1

Drop a portrait or subject photo into the upload area. The AI model is tuned for people, so results are most reliable on photos of individuals against a distinct background.

  2. 2

Adjust edge softening to taste — a value of 1 works well for most portraits. Turn on the background colour option if you want a solid fill rather than transparency.

  3. 3

Click Remove background. The model weights (~25 MB) are fetched from Hugging Face on your first run and cached, so the wait only happens once. Processing then runs entirely on your device.

Questions

Is my photo ever uploaded to a server?

No. Your image is processed entirely on your own device and is never sent anywhere. The only network request this tool makes is the one-time download of the AI model from Hugging Face.

What is downloaded from Hugging Face, and does it stay private?

The model weights for onnx-community/modnet-webnn (roughly 25 MB) are fetched from the Hugging Face CDN the first time you use this tool. The request goes to Hugging Face's servers, but your photo never does. After the download, the browser caches the model so later runs need no extra download.

Which subjects does this work best on?

The model is specifically tuned for people and portraits. It performs reliably on solo subjects with clear separation from the background. Complex scenes, dense foliage, animals, or subjects with fine hair against busy backgrounds may not cut out as cleanly.

Why is my first run slow?

The AI model (~25 MB) is downloaded from Hugging Face before the first removal. A progress bar tracks the download. Once cached in your browser, every subsequent run starts immediately.

The tool says the model could not load — what do I do?

This usually means your device is offline or a network filter is blocking the Hugging Face CDN. Check your connection, disable any VPN or content filter temporarily, then try again.

Why is the output always a PNG?

PNG is the only common image format that supports a transparent background. If you want a JPEG, switch on the background colour option to composite the subject onto a solid colour, then convert the resulting PNG separately.

What does the Edge softening slider do?

It applies a gentle blur to the cut boundary before saving, which reduces the hard fringe that can appear around the subject. A setting of 1 works for most photos; raise it if you see a hard border, or lower it to 0 for a sharp cutout.
