Grayscale Image
Strip colour from a photo and blend it towards grey using perceptually accurate Rec. 709 weights.
How it works
- 1
Drop any image onto the upload area. PNG, JPEG, WebP and most other browser-readable formats are accepted.
- 2
Use the Strength slider to decide how much colour to remove — all the way left keeps the original, all the way right gives a full grey image.
- 3
Choose your output format, then click Apply. The filtered image downloads instantly; your original file is never modified.
Questions
Why does the grey look more natural than a basic average?
The Rec. 709 luminance formula (the same standard used in HDTV) weights green more heavily than red and blue, because the human eye is most sensitive to green. A simple equal-weight average makes reds look too bright and blues too dark.
Will any image metadata survive?
Applying this filter re-encodes the pixels through a canvas, which strips EXIF and other metadata as a side-effect. If preserving metadata matters, keep a copy of the original.
What happens to transparency when I choose JPEG output?
JPEG does not support an alpha channel. Transparent areas will be filled with white when saving as JPEG. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
Does the image leave my device?
No. The entire filter runs inside your browser using your device's resources. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
More image tools
ICO Converter
Build a multi-size .ico file from a PNG or JPG, choosing which pixel sizes to include — ideal for application icons and browser favicons.
Favicon Generator
Generate a full favicon set from one image: a three-size ICO, an Apple touch icon, PWA icons, a webmanifest, and the HTML.
SVG Converter
Rasterize an SVG file to PNG, JPEG or WebP at a scale factor you choose. The result is a pixel image — not editable vector paths.
SVG to JPG
Convert an SVG to a JPEG image at the export scale you set, composited onto a solid background colour — because JPEG has no transparency.
Adjust Brightness
Lighten or darken an image by shifting every pixel's brightness up or down with a single slider.
Adjust Contrast
Increase or reduce the difference between light and dark areas to make an image pop or flatten it.
Adjust Saturation
Boost or reduce the intensity of colours in an image, all the way from vivid to greyscale.
Rotate Hue
Shift every colour in an image around the hue wheel to change the overall colour cast.
