Color Palette Generator

Pull a palette of up to 12 distinct colours out of any image, shown as swatches with hex and RGB values you can copy or download.

How it works

  1. 1

Drop any image onto the upload area and choose how many colours you want (3–12), then click Extract palette.

  2. 2

Each swatch shows the hex code and RGB value; click the copy icon next to any value to copy it to the clipboard.

  3. 3

Use the download bar to save the palette as a PNG swatch sheet, a CSS :root block with custom properties, or a JSON array.

Questions

Does the image leave my device?

No. The entire extraction runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Why is the palette computed from a smaller copy of the image?

Before colour quantisation begins, the image is downsampled so that the longest side is at most 256 px. This keeps extraction fast for large photos without meaningfully changing the colours in the result.

How are the colours chosen?

The tool uses Wu quantisation (from the image-q library) to find a set of colours that best represents the image's overall colour distribution.

Can I change the number of colours after extracting?

Yes — adjust the slider and click Extract palette again. Each run is independent.

What does the CSS download contain?

A :root rule with one custom property per colour, e.g. --color-1: #ff8800;. Paste it into any stylesheet to use the palette as design tokens.
