Questions
Why would anyone use BMP today?
BMP is occasionally required by older industrial or scientific software, certain printer drivers, and some Windows-only APIs. For almost every other purpose PNG or JPEG is a better choice.
Does BMP support transparency?
The 32-bit BGRA variant stores an alpha channel, but many applications ignore it. If you need reliable transparency across apps, export a PNG instead.
Why is the BMP file so much larger than the original?
BMP stores raw, uncompressed pixel data. A 1000×1000 24-bit image requires exactly 3 MB of pixel data regardless of content, whereas PNG and JPEG compress heavily.
Can this tool open any BMP file?
The browser's built-in image decoder handles most BMP variants for the BMP → PNG direction. Very old or unusual BMP subtypes (such as OS/2 format or RLE-compressed files) may not open correctly.
Is my file processed on a server?
No. Both the BMP encoder and the browser's own BMP decoder run entirely on your device. Your file never leaves your browser.
