Optimize PDF

Re-save your PDF with compressed object streams and optionally strip metadata to cut file size without touching the content.

How it works

  1. 1

Drop your PDF file onto the upload area and decide whether to also strip the embedded metadata (author, title, and similar fields).

  2. 2

Click Optimize PDF — the tool re-saves the file with compressed cross-reference streams, which typically reduces structural overhead.

  3. 3

The Result shows the real before and after file sizes. If optimization does not reduce the file, you are told so and the original is returned unchanged.

Questions

What does this tool actually do to the file?

It re-saves the PDF using cross-reference object streams, which compress the internal bookkeeping tables that PDF files use to locate objects. The page content, fonts, and images are not touched, so quality and text selectability are preserved.

What metadata does the strip option remove?

It clears the title, author, subject, keywords, creator application, and producer fields stored in the PDF's document information dictionary. Embedded ICC profiles and XMP streams may still contain metadata; this option covers the basic document fields only.

What if the result is not smaller?

This tool never silently returns a larger file. If the optimized version grows the size, you receive the original and a clear explanation. This is most common with PDFs that have already been saved with object streams.

Will the text still be selectable after optimization?

Yes. This tool only rewrites the PDF's internal structure. Page content, fonts, and text are not altered, so text remains selectable and searchable.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. All processing happens in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.
