Password Protect PDF
Add a password to your PDF so only people you share it with can open or edit it.
How it works
- 1
Upload your PDF and enter the password you want readers to use when opening the file.
- 2
Optionally set a separate owner password for full control, then adjust the permission toggles to allow or block printing, copying, and editing.
- 3
Click Protect PDF — your password-protected file downloads immediately, ready to share.
Questions
Is my file ever uploaded to a server?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your PDF and your password never leave your device.
What is the difference between the Open password and the Owner password?
The Open password controls who can open the file. The Owner password grants unrestricted access — a holder can change or remove all restrictions. If you leave the Owner password blank, the Open password covers both roles.
What happens if I forget the password?
The password cannot be recovered. Keep a record of it somewhere safe before sharing the protected file.
Do the permission toggles work in every PDF reader?
The permissions are written into the PDF as standard flags. Most PDF readers honour them, but some third-party tools may ignore them. For strong access control, the Open password itself is the most reliable protection.
Can I protect a PDF that is already password-protected?
Remove the existing password first using the Remove PDF Password tool, then come back here to set a new one.
