Extract Text from PDF

Pull every word out of a PDF into plain text you can copy, search, or save as a .txt file.

How it works

  1. 1

Drop a PDF onto the upload area, choose how you want pages separated, and click Extract text.

  2. 2

The tool reads the text layer embedded in each page using the browser's PDF engine.

  3. 3

Copy the result or click the download link to save it as a plain-text file.

Questions

Why does the result say the PDF is a scan?

Scanned PDFs are images of pages with no underlying text layer. The text extractor can only read text that was embedded at creation time. To get text from a scan you need OCR software.

The extracted text looks jumbled — is that a bug?

PDF text order depends on how the file was created. Complex layouts like multi-column pages or rotated text may not extract in reading order. Use the separator option to see where each page ends.

Can I extract text from password-protected PDFs?

Not directly. Remove the password with the Unlock PDF tool first, then use this tool.

Is my file sent anywhere?

No. The PDF is read and processed entirely in your browser. Nothing leaves your device.
