Compress PDF

Shrink your PDF file with a lossless re-save or a rasterize pass that trades selectable text for a smaller size.

How it works

  1. 1

Drop your PDF file onto the upload area and choose a compression mode. Lossless keeps text selectable; rasterize converts each page to a JPEG image for a potentially smaller file.

  2. 2

For rasterize mode, pick the resolution and JPEG quality that balance file size against visual fidelity. Lower values mean a smaller file but coarser images.

  3. 3

Click Compress PDF — the Result shows you the real before-and-after sizes. If the output is not smaller, the original is returned and you are told why.

Questions

What is the difference between lossless and rasterize?

Lossless re-saves the PDF structure with object-stream compression. Your text stays selectable and searchable, and the visual quality is unchanged. Rasterize renders every page to a JPEG image and rebuilds a new PDF from those images, which can be much smaller but removes selectable text entirely.

Will rasterize mode make text unsearchable?

Yes. The rasterize option converts each page to a JPEG image, so the text in the output is a picture of text rather than actual text. You will not be able to copy, search, or select it. Choose lossless mode if you need to keep text selectable.

What if the output is larger than the original?

This tool tells you honestly. If compression produces a bigger file, you receive the original unchanged and an explanation. This happens most often with PDFs that are already well-compressed or contain mostly scanned images.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is processed entirely in your browser. No bytes leave your device at any point.

Are the size reductions the same as a desktop tool?

Not always. Lossless compression is limited to structural savings; it does not recompress embedded images the way Acrobat's 'Reduce File Size' does. Rasterize at a low DPI can produce very small files but at the cost of image quality and selectable text — a trade-off desktop tools also make.
