Hash Generator

Compute MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 checksums of any text, entirely in your browser.

How it works

  1. 1

Type or paste the text you want to hash.

  2. 2

Choose an algorithm — SHA-256 is a good default; MD5 is available for legacy compatibility.

  3. 3

Run to get the hex digest. Toggle uppercase if your target system requires capital letters.

Questions

Which algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 is the best choice for most purposes. MD5 and SHA-1 are considered weak for security use but are still useful for checksums and legacy systems.

How is MD5 computed if it isn't in Web Crypto?

The Web Crypto API does not include MD5. This tool uses a small, self-contained MD5 implementation written directly in TypeScript — no external library needed.

Does my text leave the browser?

No. SHA hashes are computed with the browser's built-in Web Crypto API; MD5 runs in pure JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server.

Can I hash a file with this tool?

This tool hashes text. To hash a file, paste the file's text content here, or use a dedicated file-hashing tool.
